History enthusiasts will be satisfied with the history of Texas found in La Grange. This small town with Old World charm and rich history will celebrate its 29th anniversary as a Main Street City in 2025, and is full of culture and somewhat mysterious. Check out all the top attractions in La Grange, TX, and plan a day trip.
La Grange, TX, in Fayette County (Central Texas), lies on the Colorado River between Houston and Austin. I had some time to spare while visiting Round Top in its off-season, so I took a short road trip to see what I could of this cultural town. La Grange will be one of the 50 small towns in Texas included in my book, released in the Fall of 2026.
Top Attractions In La Grange, TX
Besides visiting the beautiful Fayette County Courthouse in La Grange, there are many more historical buildings just as pretty as this one above, including the Historic Casino Hall. This courthouse was built in 1891 and designed in the Romanesque Revival style. Open Monday-Friday from 8-5 pm.
The Historic Casino Hall (Visitors Center)

It’s always a good idea to drop by every visitor center in towns you visit. They usually have information on the city that you may not know. And this one is a bonus. The building is old and probably has stories of its own. It’s also a history room and a performing arts venue open M-F and Saturdays. The La Grange Visitors Center has information on local attractions, historic exhibits, and public restrooms.
Texas Heroes Museum
171 S. Main St.
If you were to tour the museum, it would most likely start in the Sheriff’s Office. Why? Because this old building was once the Fayette County Old Jail. This office’s photos and plaques honor Law Enforcement, Firefighters, First Responders, and Paramedics. Walking through the museum, you’ll see displays of famous veterans like Audie Murphy and Chris Kyle. Military artifacts, uniforms, and pictures are displayed everywhere. There is always someone inside who can take you on a tour. Admission is FREE. Texas Heroes Museum. Open Friday through Sunday at different times.
Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites
Address: 414 State Loop 92.
This place houses a stone monument commemorating the Texas War for Independence heroes. There are also ruins of the state’s third-largest brewer when it was most popular. Open daily 8 am – 4:30 pm. If you have heard of this (I had not) and are intrigued by those historical events, visiting here would make sense.
The Historic Faison House
822 S. Jefferson St.
This mid-19th-century home is one of the oldest in Fayette County and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the home to one of the earliest settlers, a military hero, and land baron, Nathaniel W. Faison (1817-1870). The original furnishings of the wealthy Faison family are still intact just as they were back then. The family lived there for nearly 90 years. Open Saturdays from 12-4 pm.
The Texas Quilt Museum
140 W. Colorado St.
The Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange is dedicated to showcasing the art of antique and contemporary quilting. It features rotating exhibits, including traveling shows and displays from various collections, highlighting themes, techniques, and quilt-making concepts.
If you’re lucky enough to visit on May 10, 2025, the Butterfly Jubilee will be at the Texas Quilt Museum from 11 am – 2 pm.

Stay at The Historic Olle Hotel
Small-town boutique hotels are all the rage. They are my favorite places to stay. The Olle Hotel is located in Flatonio (minutes from La Grange) and is a 124-year-old historic hotel. It was voted the Best Hotel and Bed and Breakfast in Fayette County. If you’re staying overnight to see more of La Grange, look into staying here for pure comfort, spa services, relaxation in a clawfoot tub, a fireplace, and top hospitality.
MKT Railroad Depot & Museum
260 N. Washington St.
It started in 1880 with the first rail connection to La Grange via Galveston. Later, the Taylor, Bastrop, and Houston Railway built through La Grange, and the first train stopped at the depot on August 17, 1887.
Learn the history of the local railroads and their importance to the area. Open Saturday from 9-2 pm and Thursday-Friday 10-2 pm.
Texas Czech Heritage & Cultural Center
250 W. Fairgrounds Rd.
Visit the cultural center’s museum, library, amphitheater, and pavilion. Also, see restored historic Czech family homes and learn how they lived back then—closed on Mondays and Sundays.
Polka Lovers Club Of Texas Museum
275 W. Fairgrounds Rd.
Polka fans swarm this museum to learn more about polka music and dance and to see the exhibits, which include The 1850 Hoelscher Haus, the 1915 Player Piano, Frank’s Place Barrrrr, Band exhibits, and more. Polka dancing is a Czech tradition, has a distinctive sound and dance, and they sure loved beer back in the day!
Blissful Folly Farm (Winery)
I always include wineries in the area since they’re such a great hit with my audience. I love to sample all types of wines. The Blissful Folly Farm is a working farm that raises chickens, bees, goats, and sheep and has a tasting room on site. You’ll find Rohan Meadery, Rohan Wines, and Blissful Folly Hard Ciders.
