Top Historic Sites in Texas to Visit
While you’re exploring Texas’s historical sites, you may want to add these top historic Texas towns to your list, too!
Barrington Plantation
Washington, Independent Trail Region
The Barrington Living History Farm is the final home of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. It’s now a living history farm. When we were there, besides touring the house, we picked cotton, saw volunteers in era costumes, and noticed an ox that helps them plow the fields. My son was amazed. Admission charge.
Confederate Reunion Grounds
Mexia, Brazos Trail Region
Civil War veterans met here for reunions between 1889 and 1946. It’s now a site for historical events, recreations, and family reunions. The site is spread out, with remnants of a possible home, a chimney, and forts. It’s a great place to hang out before heading somewhere else. Be sure to bring a picnic.
Booker T. Washington Park is a very popular area for family reunions and is also in Mexia.

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site
Denison, Lakes Trail Region
The Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site was our latest stop. This is where our 34th U.S. president and World War II commander, Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower, was born in 1890.
I was in Denison on a media trip, and the visit coincided with their annual Ike’s Fest. Spending the weekend in Denison gave me a new appreciation for a town I’d never really visited. Its Main Street is filled with shops, boutiques, restaurants, and more. Lake Texoma is right there, and the Katy Depot is a beautiful site inside and out. It also has shops and restaurants inside.
Gift Store at Fort Griffin
Fort Griffin State Historic Site
Albany, Forts Trail Region
Just up the road from Breckenridge, TX, this fort stands with amazing remnants of the site that once protected white settlers from Comanche and Kiowa raids. This 19th-century military post and former boomtown was established on July 31, 1867.
The site is open to the public for a small admission fee. If you get there early, you can take one of their golf carts to see it all; otherwise, you’ll have to walk. The walk is nice, though.
At Fort Griffin, you can pack a picnic and spend the day exploring with family. That’s what we suggest!
Fulton Mansion State Historic Site
Rockport-Fulton, Tropical Trail Region
The Fulton Mansion State Historic Site in Rockport, Texas, stands as one of the region’s most significant architectural landmarks. Celebrated for its historical importance, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you’re headed to the beach, Rockport Bay is a great choice. You can even see the bay from this mansion. My son and I visited Rockport-Fulton this past summer, and though it rained a lot, we still enjoyed exploring and eating out at some fabulous restaurants. Check out what we did here: Things to do in Rockport-Fulton.
Landmark Inn State Historic Site
Castroville, Hill Country Trail Region
This photo above isn’t the Landmark Inn, but it is a significant building in Castroville. It shows one of Texas’s oldest buildings, brought here from France in 1998. It serves as Castroville’s visitor center and also has replicas of the furniture used back in the Alsatians’ day.
However, the 1849 Landmark Inn is Castroville’s original entry point and offers a glimpse of San Antonio’s turn-of-the-century history. Bed-and-breakfast guest rooms are available for rent that reflect the 1850s and 1880s.
Visit in spring to see red poppies in yards, businesses, and fields.
Back then, it took travelers a full day to get from San Antonio to Castroville. Today it takes 25 minutes.

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site
Washington, Independent Trail Region
The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed here on March 2, 1836. It’s a great history lesson for upper-grade elementary students. I remember taking my son here in 5th grade. He knew what they were talking about during a demonstration.
Today, the park preserves much of the historical township, including the Barrington Farm (above), the home of the last president of the Republic of Texas, a museum, and a park. The park offers pavilions, kids’ play areas, and shaded areas overlooking the Brazos River. The park is a great place to have family reunions. My family has met here twice, most recently in May 2026.

National Museum of the Pacific War
Fredericksburg, Hill Country Trail Region
This famous Hill Country town isn’t just for wine lovers and shopping fanatics; it’s also full of history and great for history buffs. The National Museum of the Pacific War is a must-see, with memorabilia that tells the story of World War II. It’s the only museum in the U.S. that showcases this much. Worth the trip!
