Leave the obvious behind and explore these wine getaways in other regions of Texas.
Beyond “Wine Country,” aka the Hill Country, offers a surprisingly rich collection of wine getaways where vineyards meet pine forests, prairies, lakes, and quaint downtowns. These regions don’t get the same spotlight as Fredericksburg, but they deliver their own sense of place, often with quieter tasting rooms, family‑run businesses, and landscapes that shift from one corner of the state to another. Explores these wine stays across Texas, and you might just be surprised how quaint and nostalgic they are.
Beyond the Hill Country: Wine Stays Across Texas
Blanc Du Bois is a varietal that reflects the East Texas region. When I attended the Piney Woods Wine Trail last May, I had great conversations with all the wineries present. I learned that many wineries are owned and managed by married couples and that sweet wine is favored in this region.
North Texas has become one of the state’s most quietly dynamic wine regions, with clusters of small, family‑owned wineries spread across rolling prairies and historic towns. The area supports the popular wine trail- North Texas Wine Trail, offering patriots scenic drives and intimate tasting rooms across the upper prairies and lakes region.
Harelton
Enoch’s Stomp Vineyard and Winery is located in the piney woods northwest of Marshall, TX. It’s the real deal here, complete with this guy (above) as one of the winemakers. He told me that East Texas folks are most keen on sweet wines. But don’t worry, if you’re a dry red lover like me, you’ll find that too!
You’re in luck if you like Blanc Du Bois, a white wine that Enoch’s Stomp has won over 110 medals for. They offer estate wines, as well as wines from Washington State, where half of their family members are from. They also source some of their grapes from the High Plains (Lubbock area), where they grow the best.
Relax and unplug in one of Enoch’s two adult-only upscale villas on its beautiful rolling vineyards, with everything you need for two people (no pets). Fine dining is also available with reservations.
Pittsburg
Situated in northeast Texas, not too far from Bob Sandlin Lake, Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards is located on a 40-acre estate vineyard tucked in the woods on the backroads. Bring the gang, plan to stay awhile, and enjoy a bottle of wine with lunch or dinner.
Leave room for dessert because it’s all handmade and so good – shareable too. Here is a peek at their delicious carrot cake.
Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards Blue Jay Cottage
Los Pinos Ranch has a darling cottage available for rent, just steps from the winery and restaurant. It’s really adorable and cozy. My time there was very enjoyable and quiet. I also enjoyed my time tooling around Pittsburg and seeing all the history in town …and there’s a lot of it. I especially liked learning about Carroll Shelby and Bo Pilgrim and how their influence shaped the town. Read about it here >>> Top Attractions in Pittsburg, Texas.
Plantersville
Bernhardt Winery in Plantersville is located about an hour’s drive northwest of Houston (closer to Conroe).
A beautiful bed and breakfast on a 12‑acre vineyard with rolling views and a relaxed countryside feel. The place has a couple of options to choose from. The Loft and The Suite are available to rent, and both include a complimentary wine tasting, cheese and charcuterie board, and a continental-style breakfast in your room or on the patio for two. That sounds like a great romantic getaway to me.
Bryan
Since 1977, Messina Hof Estate Winery has been a beloved Brazos Valley landmark. Whether you’re sipping award‑winning wines, settling in for an overnight getaway, or indulging in a refined culinary experience, the Estate Winery delivers a setting where tradition, flavor, and genuine charm come together beautifully. The winery is kid-friendly.
The Villa B&B at Messina Hof is a few steps from the winery and offers several exquisite rooms to rent. Half are downstairs, and the other half is upstairs, but everyone comes downstairs each morning to enjoy a great breakfast provided with your stay.
The Vintage House Restaurant is also just as exquisite, where you can enjoy a bottle of wine with your steak! Reservations are required. If you’re there for all three, stay long enough to enjoy the pond behind the winery – it’s a lovely area, and the walking trail is great too. Maybe the turtles will be out. If so, get some feed from inside the winery for them, free of charge.
Washington
Chapelton Vineyards is a beautiful vineyard offering award-winning wines, tours, wine tastings, and small bites. From the photos on their website, the villas are elegant. This would make the perfect wine lover’s escape. Reservations are encouraged. Large groups required.
The vineyard is not too far from the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. And while you’re there, take some time to visit the other four popular towns in the area: Independence, Chappell Hill, Brenham, and Burton.
Athens
Tara Vineyard & Winery is off Hwy 175 before entering Athens. If going further in town, the East Texas Arboretum will be on your right.
Indulge in their award-winning 2019 Mourvedre Texas wine or explore their diverse wine list… inside or outside. Food available.
Enjoy the animals on the property and the view. We love sitting outside and watching the animals play. Some will even come up to you. The love pats from humans. Tara Vineyard & Winery is kid-friendly and pet-friendly.
Florence
The Vineyard at Florence — A Central Texas destination boutique resort and winery 35 miles north of Austin with a Tuscan-inspired setting that’s open 7 days a week. Oh my – they have a spa, a pool, and even a fitness center. The restaurant comes with its own chef, and the food looks divine on the website.
Just another place I want to visit. This is what I call a full-style resort. Let’s go! And there’s more – hiking trails, and lots more.
The villas are decorated in modern decor with a slice of color – perfect for a wine getaway with whoever you want to bring!
Gilmer
Rowdy Creek Ranch Vineyards isn’t that rowdy, but more of a peaceful retreat tucked away on 22 acres in the lush piney woods of East Texas. The on‑site winery offers a lineup of award‑winning wines made right on the property. Guests can savor thoughtful farm‑to‑table dishes at the charming restaurant, where each plate highlights fresh, local ingredients and the region’s rich culinary character.
Choose to stay in one of their cabins, cottages, or a glamping trailer to round out your wine getaway in East Texas.
Providence Village (Aubrey)
Fortunata Winery in North Texas is an all-adult (21+) winery offering fine wine, wood-fired pizzas, charcuterie boards, live music, cozy retreats with a Tuscany vibe, and so much more.
Check out the Chili Cook-Off they are having in April.
Though I love the Hill Country, and I don’t say that lightly, because it’s my favorite area. However, there are so many other places in Texas to visit for a glass of wine and a bed stay. So, this is your cue to perhaps ditch the Hill Country for other wine stays across Texas.
