1. San Angelo’s Visitor Center

Make San Angelo’s Visitor Center your first stop. It’s one of the most beautiful visiting centers I’ve ever laid eyes on. It may not look like it from the front, but when you see the back, you’ll see what I am talking about. It’s absolutely gorgeous back there, and it’s all free to roam. Take your time and let the little ones play and explore. It’s definitely one of the top attractions in San Angelo.

Additionally, the visit center is filled with brochures, books, souvenirs, coffee, and volunteers who can provide you with everything you need to know about the city. Restrooms are on the campus.

2. The Bosque in San Angelo

The Bosque is a lovely park located along the Concho River. It opens on Memorial Day and runs through the end of the summer. This park offers a variety of free and low-cost activities, including kayaking, miniature golf, paddle boats, Kona Ice, and more.

Whether in San Angelo for a night or a weekend getaway, put The Bosque on your list of things to do. This lovely spot overlooking the Concho River offers opportunities for family photos, seating areas, and a spacious area for kids to run around.

3. Take A Leisurely Walk Around The Concho River

Walk along the Concho River and marvel at multiple gardens, parks, the ducks, and a few interesting mosaic-tiled vehicles. If you have little ones, check out the Kids Kingdom, a free playground/park with plenty of shaded seating. This area is approximately half a mile from The Bosque. Pets are welcome on a leash.

4. Fort Concho National Historic Landmark Site

Start your day at Historic Fort Concho. Fort Concho is a National Historic Landmark that encompasses most of the former Army post, featuring 24 original and restored fort structures, as well as additional exhibits and displays throughout the year. This is a must-see stop and can take 2-3 hours to fully explore, and it’s well worth it!

Be sure to stop at the museum and gift shop on the property.

5. Miss Hattie’s Restaurant

For an old-fashioned American restaurant and a romantic treat with an impressive menu, try Miss Hattie’s Restaurant for dinner. It’s housed in a Victorian-style building that dates back to the late 1880s. You may want to leave the kids with someone else.

6. Heritage Park Of San Angelo

Heritage Park in downtown provides a unique environment for anyone to learn about the rich cultural heritage of West Texas. Be sure to visit the Pocket Park as well. Open 8 am to 8 pm.

7. Railway Museum of San Angelo

The Railway Museum takes you on a journey through the Railway Depot built in 1910. Open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Admission fee.

8. International Water Lily Collection

Did you know that San Angelo is home to the most extensive collection of varieties of water lilies? It’s called the International Water Lily Collection, and it’s one of the world’s leading collections of waterlilies located at the Civic League Park in San Angelo, Texas! Seven ponds, featuring over 150 varieties, are viewable from April to October. Admission if free.

Travel Tip: The peak bloom season is in September.

9. San Angelo State Park

San Angelo State Park is most famous for its bison and Official Texas State Longhorn herds. A tour can be arranged to see the bison and longhorn graze. With over 50 miles of some of the best trails in the area, the park is the perfect place to hike or bike. See fossilized tracks of creatures that predate dinosaurs! Spend the day hiking and fishing, or camp, or reserve a log cabin. Admission fee.

10. Old Central Firehouse Bed & Brew

Stay in the 1929 Old Central Firehouse Bed and Brew for a unique experience! Each room is Firehouse-themed. Located downtown.

11. Eggemeyer’s General Store

The Eggemeyer’s General Store, located at 35 E. Concho Ave in downtown. The 13,000+ sq ft building offers an authentic general store experience, complete with historic tin-pressed ceilings and a hardwood oak floor. Discover fresh-ground gourmet coffees, kitchenware, homemade fudge, jewelry, Western books, fine leather handbags, and a wide selection of exciting items!

13. San Angelo Sheep Statues

Be sure to stop by the visitor’s center to pick up the brochure on the first 100+ painted sheep in the city called the ‘Welcome Ewe.’ You will see many sheep as you drive around town. A complete list of all the sheep is available online, so you can check them off as you go.

Throughout the city of San Angelo, fiberglass statues of sheep can be found. Local artists decorate the sheep statues to pay tribute to San Angelo’s history as a wool marketing center. Have fun finding over 100 sheep!

Go on a mural hunt. There are 15 historical murals to discover in San Angelo. Each one brings to life an aspect of West Texas frontier life on the city walls of San Angelo.

15. Paintbrush Alley

Located between the Texas Theatre and Firestone on Concho Ave.

Paintbrush Alley is hidden in the alleyway behind Firestone on West Concho Avenue and Texas Theater on West Twohig Avenue! Colorful murals portray Texas culture in the 1956 motion picture Giant Theme. The Western drama depicted life in West Texas and featured actors such as Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean. You will encounter each of these stars in the murals of Paintbrush Alley!

16. Pop Art Museum

The Pop Art Museum is an open-air museum and was once a 1950s-era downtown bowling alley, transformed into an art masterpiece. Over 30 local artists came together to create this highly Instagrammable, pop-inspired space, filled with unique artistry and eye-catching elements inspired by “Pop.”

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is known for its collection of American ceramics. It’s the most humorous and enjoyable collection and a feast of colors, styles, and themes, from sea anemones to a fish shop and a green dog.
