Texas Getaways You Didn’t Know You Needed

Your adventure starts here – make it a getaway to remember!

From hidden gems to relaxing retreats and fun Texas getaways, we hope to inspire you to take a vacation this summer or at any time to one of our recommendations or anywhere else you find. One never knows, an unexpected getaway might bring your family closer like never before!

From the rolling landscape of the Texas Hill Country to the charming woodland in East Texas, to outside the city limits of any large city (other than our favorite Fort Worth), we are sharing our favorite places in Texas for a full-blown family vacation.

Texas Getaways To Take Now

Summer is off to a great start here in Texas. Most parts of Texas have received some rain, which we needed. The weather hasn’t reached 100 degrees (yet), and the sun is shining… and it’s 5 O’clock somewhere! Let’s Texas!

Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma

Just before you head into Oklahoma, you’ll take a turn to Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma. The resort offers spacious guest rooms and villas, two restaurants, a three-tiered pool, a children’s slide, and a tiki bar.

Families can enjoy the three cocktail lounges (one is adult-only), the fitness center, a luxury spa, and an 18-hole golf course. Plus, there is horseback riding available about 3 minutes down the road.

Kerrville, Texas

Just when you thought there was no other place in the Texas Hill Country that beats Fredericksburg, here comes Kerrville – shining bright and a hidden gem to some. Situated on the Guadalupe River, it’s rich in history and family attractions, like Cafe On The Ridge – my favorite place.

Okay, Kerriville is nothing like its neighbor, and they don’t compete with each other in terms of things to do, because there are distinct differences. Kerrville doesn’t have all the wineries, but it does have a quaint downtown area with a variety of shopping and dining options. You’ll find many parks in Kerrville, and some are on the river where you can rent a kayak.

Read how my friend and I spent a perfect weekend in Kerrville.

in Frisco

Frisco, Texas

This city is booming with family-friendly activities. It’s a wonderful city for sports fanatics. We stayed at the Westin Stonebrair Golf Resort and enjoyed the pool and the spa. Although the Star Plex area is the trendy place to be, don’t overlook downtown Frisco, where the history begins.

Emily Ann Gardens

Wimberley, Texas

Are you like the rest of the world and haven’t made it to this small town in the Hill Country? Well, someone has, because when I was there, it was busy …and that was in April. But of course, there’s lots to do and see there for the whole family: Jacob’s Well, The Blue Hole, Old Baldy, Cypress Creek,

Will you be traveling in an RV? If so, take a look at where I stayed a couple of months ago. They have numerous RV spaces and the most adorable cabins—making it the best RV Park in Wimberley, TX.

Margaritaville Lake Resort Lake Conroe

Did you know there is a Margaritaville in Conroe, TX? Yes, right on Lake Conroe. I went here alone, while another writer came with her family. We all had a great time. It’s worth checking out for a Texas getaway. I recommended it for the kids! Conroe is also a cool town to stroll around.

Fort Worth Stockyards

Let’s break it up. There’s Downtown, the Stockyards, the Cultural District, West 7th, Southside, and the West Fort Worth area. I’m talking stockyards here, aka a Western flair adventure for families.

With more than four hotels now in the area, Billy Bob’s, the John Wayne Museum, so much shopping than ever, and plenty of places to eat, you and your family could have a fantastic Texas getaway right in cowtown.

And, if you didn’t know it, Taylor Sheridan and partners just purchased The Cattlemen’s Restaurant in the Stockyards. I wonder what they will change about the place – it was already an outstanding steakhouse.

Tim Love’s Lonesome Dove Bistro gets high accolades. Everything he does is superior.

Now in Grapevine!

Grapevine, Texas

There’s the Gaylord Texan Hotel & Resort with a spa, pool, waterpark, dining options, and shopping – something for everyone. Across the street is the Great Wolf Lodge, primarily designed for kids to enjoy, but adults and teens also have a great time there. Then, there’s the whole Grapevine Main Street thing going on in this town. There are at least ten wine tasting rooms on Main Street alone, and if you go south almost to the highway, there’s Hotel Vin and Harvest Hall, which is a whole new adventure with live music outside, and sometimes they play movies out there, too!

Meow Wolf Grapevine’s The Real Unreal is located at the Grapevine Mills Mall. Peppa Pig World & Play is also inside the mall.

I love Grapevine, and no family can go wrong making this place a Texas vacation to remember.

Also, Gaylord Texan’s Summerfest 2025 is called “Universe of Light.” It’s a lantern show (indoors) featuring DC Legends such as Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and many more. Use my promo code: TRAVELING for $5 off per ticket. The show lasts until September 1, 2025. Buy tickets here >>> https://www.gaylordhotels.com/dcsummer/universeoflight

San Antonio

The Alamo

Begin with San Antonio’s most legendary site — the Alamo. Dive into the real-life drama of Texas independence with a tour and imagine past missions that shaped the state.

The UNESCO World Heritage Trek

The Mission Trail (Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan, Mission Espada), where you can take a walking or biking tour through the city’s beautifully preserved 18th-century Spanish colonial missions. These active churches and National Park sites offer breathtaking architecture and storytelling.

River Walk

Take a stroll on the river walk, or a boat ride on the river, or eat a fabulous dinner, or do all three, which millions do.

Historic Market Square

Indulge in authentic Tex-Mex cuisine and local artisan goods while blending in with the crowds.

The Pearl District

Evening strolls, sleek cocktail lounges, and live music provide a sophisticated contrast to daytime action — ideal for a high-profile couple!

Natural Bridge Caverns

Let’s not forget about the Natural Bridge Caverns. If you didn’t know, there is also a zip line course available. Everyone who likes a thrill will want to zip the line.

The San Luis Resort

Galveston Island

Two places come to mind when I think of Galveston Island. San Luis Resort and Hotel Galvez Spa and Resort. I’ve been to both, and both are across the street from the beach. You choose. Texas getaways are fun at the beach – any beach at that!

San Luis Resort

Just look at that pool! You’ve got the beach across the street and this fabulous pool. What more do you need? Inside is a whirl of fun, too.

Grand Galvez Spa & Resort

I took my son here for one night. We spent most of our time across the street at Hotel Galvez’s private beach. If you’re there on a Sunday, consider splurging on Sunday Brunch.

Wildcatter Ranch & Resort And Steakhouse

Okay, families, listen up. I just visited this resort, and although I stayed in one of the guest rooms, I can report that they have 16 cabin suites – perfect for families. The cabins I saw are situated near the outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as the outdoor game area, which features a basketball court, tetherball, and ample space for kicking a soccer ball around.

Wildcatter Ranch & Resort is nestled just outside of Graham, TX (northwest central) or near Possum Kingdom Lake.

Pittsburg, TX

Coming soon …as soon as the end of June (when I visit). But I already know this is a special East Texas town with a rich history and plenty of fun! It’s also known as the Hot Link Capital of Texas.
