top things to do in Denison, TX

Denison, TX, blends charm, 1800s Main Street, and Lake Texoma adventures, all in one visit.

North Texas has another unique destination to add to your list of weekend getaways near Dallas. Denison is a place where you can relax and take in the historic charm of downtown, exceptional dining, and Lake Texoma recreation just one hour north of the big city and one mile south of the Texas-Oklahoma border. I’m almost positive you’ll find these top things to do in Denison, TX, enjoyable.

Denison is home to Perrin Air Force Base and Katy Train Depot, the birthplace of President Dwight Eisenhower, and T.V. Munson, where Lake Texoma begins, and the beautiful 1800s Main Street and downtown districts. It celebrates being a Texas Music Friendly City.

Did you know that our 34th president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, was born in Denison, TX? And that Eisenhower State Park is named after him? He didn’t stay long, but he did put his mark on the town.

Disclosure: Discover Denison hosted us for a weekend at the Hilton Garden Inn and treated us to meals and entertainment. All opinions are my own.

Top Things To Do in Denison, TX

Just an hour north of Dallas, you can enjoy fun on Lake Texoma and plenty of reasons to make Denison, TX, your next weekend getaway. Whether you go in winter, spring, summer, or fall, there is always something going on in town and around the lake. From wine tastings, annual festivals, live music, and local events to fishing tournaments and so on, your whole family is welcome!

When driving around, be sure to notice the large Eisenhower Monument on Hwy 75 at N. Loy Lake Rd (exit 67).

Also, there are 12 Texas Travel Information Centers, and one is near Denison at 6801 US 69/75. These centers have a wealth of information about Texas as a whole. There is every kind of brochure you could want.

Historic Main Street Boutiques, Wineries, Shops & Restaurants

Historic downtown Denison is swarming with adorable, chic boutiques, specialty shops, and restaurants, and Main Street, with its red-brick road, is at the center of it all. Enjoy art studios, bookstores, fashion, and good eats, and don’t forget to stop by the visitor center to pick up a brochure or two and get valuable information you won’t find anywhere else.

Downtown Denison Wine Walk

Denison’s annual wine walk down Main Street was Saturday, September 5th. Denison is part of the Texoma wine region. Homestead Winery stands out for its tastings and Texas wine history. I enjoyed tasting several wines for the first time. My favorite was the Tempranillo at Landon’s Winery, but then again, I’ve been to the one in Grapevine, and I knew they offer great dry reds!

If the tastings weren’t inside a winery, they were inside a boutique, bookstore, restaurant, and more. I think that’s a great idea to mix the wine walk with shopping!

Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s T.V. Munson Wine Walk in September.

Bonjour, Denison! French Market

Denison’s new signature event, Bonjour, Denison! at the Katy Depot featured local vendors and live entertainment. It was one hot day, but luckily the event was inside the beautiful depot. Going forward, this event will take place in the July to help welcome French exchange students for the upcoming school year. Another great idea Denison puts on.

About the Katy Depot

The beautifully restored 1911 Katy Depot anchors Denison’s rich rail history, offering a photogenic backdrop and plenty of inspiration for sharing the story of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.

Dwight D Eisenhower Birthplace Home

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site

This is the site where Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in 1890, which includes his home, a statue of him, and a store & information center. Admission charge.

When we visited, Ike’s History Fest was in full swing. Tents were spread out on the lawn; each representing several other historic sites and figures around Texas, such as Ft. McKavett, Hagerman, Sam Rayburn House, Bell Maxey House, and more. Ike’s History Fest is an annual event in September.

Eisenhower State Park

Many visitors come here to fish for striped bass. Some come to camp, while others love to swim and drive their sailboat in the wind. Camping and hiking on 4.5 miles of trails with excellent views of Lake Texoma can be enjoyable, too.

Tasting & Tour at Ironroot Republic Distillery

There’s a lot of history here, and the tour tells the story of how they got started, how they make their whiskey, why they chose Denison to start the business, and all about the family. And of course, tastings! Learn which whiskey or bourbon is best to use to make your favorite drinks.

Tours at Ironroot Republic Distillery are on Saturdays at 12 and 2 pm and last roughly 1.5 hours. Cost: $18 per person.

Sunset Cruise on Lake Texoma

Denison is the gateway to Lake Texoma.

Texoma has parks, camping areas, boat ramps, marinas, a wildlife refuge, fishing, and picnic tables. There are several outfitters that offer cruises on the lake.

Where To Eat in Denison, TX

There are more dining options in Denison than you probably realize, and we had to make a few choices ourselves. Brody wanted Mexican food for lunch, but we settled for Emily’s Kitchen, a local’s favorite that serves up great homestyle dishes.

Emily’s Kitchen

I was so pleased with my chicken salad sandwich, but I couldn’t help but lick my lips over my son’s fish plate. Both meals were plentiful, and I did not even finish mine.

The Denison Visitor Center is right next door to the restaurant, which I always recommend stopping by. It’s got brochures and volunteers inside that can help you locate a place or give you recommendations.

The Point Restaurant from the water

The Point Restaurant

Enjoy a farm-to-table dinner and Sunday brunch overlooking beautiful Lake Texoma. We didn’t get a chance to go, but it sure looks nice from the water. Open Thursday-Sunday.

Thai and Sushi All You Can Eat

Yes, for $33 a person, you can have all the sushi you can eat. My son went absolutely bonkers here. His favorite food is sushi. My favorite was the shrimp tempura. Leave room for dessert.

An upscale dining experience inside Katy Depot. Reservations are required.

A few other restaurants that were thrown around are Deviled Eggs Co., Lettuce Indulgence, The George Tavern, CJ’s Coffee Cafe, and Rustico.

There are many more things to do in Denison, TX, than what I’ve listed here. This mid-size city is a great place to get away from the big city of Dallas to unwind and decompress.
