reasons to visit south padres island in the off-season

Here are 12+ reasons why visiting South Padre Island in winter will stretch your vacation dollars.

Top reasons to visit South Padre Island in the off-season. South Padre Island is always open, no matter the time of year. There are many benefits to visiting the island in the off-season. For one, milder weather; two, it’s not as crowded; and three, hotel rates are lower. And don’t forget that the birds are migrating there to keep warm for the winter.

The best time to visit South Padre Island is anytime. Still, the off-season is from September to February for pleasant weather (average temperature is 79 degrees during the day and 65 degrees at night) and fewer crowds. But besides these two excellent reasons, you’ll get cheaper hotel rates, and perhaps even the attractions are less expensive. SPI’s off-season does not impact shopping, fun, or good food. Everything is still open all year.

The peak season in South Padre is Memorial Day to Labor Day. If you’re wondering about the peak hurricane season in SPI, it’s August to early October.

Many winter Texans migrate to the island to escape the cold we sometimes get!

Top Reasons To Visit South Padre Island In The Off-Season

#1 Hotel Rates Are Lower

Here are five hotel rate comparisons from peak season to off-season.

Isla Grand Beach Resort / Ave. weekend nightPeak Season $203 / Off-Season $114
Holiday Inn Express / Ave. weekend nightPeak Season $194 / Off-Season $122
Margaritaville Beach Resort / Ave. weekend nightPeak Season $389 / Off-Season $166
Hilton Garden Inn Beachfront / Ave. wkend nightPeak Season $298 / Off-Season $156
Sand Rose Beach Resort / Ave. weekend nightPeak Season $339 / Off-Season $138

#2 It’s Less Crowded

As we all know, peak season anywhere is more crowded and expensive. Take advantage of South Padre’s off-season months and have more to spend on food, fun, and souvenirs. Again, going to SPI in September through February will save you money, and the lines will be shorter – creating less wait time!

#3 The Fishing is Good

Well, that’s what I’ve heard.

#4 Weather is Nice

The average temperature in the off-season is around 79 degrees during the day and about 65 degrees at night. That’s not bad when it could reach 40 degrees any day in North Texas.

#5 Birds Are Migrating

Fall migrations bring a flock of birds to the island. Birding enthusiasts from England, Spain, Netherlands, and Puerto Rico, as well as people from all over the United States, visit South Padre Island during its bird migration.

#6 Outdoor Winter Activities in South Padre Island

Holidays in South Padre Island are rich and fun! Have you ever spent a holiday on the beach? Here are a few other winter activities and attractions in South Padre Island that are not mentioned in bold:

  • Follow the Sea Turtle Art Trail. Go by the visitor’s center to pick up a trail map.
  • Sandcastle Days
  • Golfing is grand
  • City parks are always open for kids to roam
  • Bars are still serving adult drinks
  • Boat rentals are a thing

#7 Seafood is Always Good

Local flavor is always delicious at the beach – no matter the time of year!

#9 SPI Kite Fest – Returning in February 2025

B&S Kites is bringing back this fantastic event, all indoors this time. It will be February 3 & 4, 2025, from 6:30 -8:30 pm. Tickets should go on sale in October and will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Tickets are $15/pp or $25 for both shows.

#10 And There’s Port Isabel

Laguna Madre Bay has a rich Texas history, and the Port Isabel Lighthouse is an excellent viewing. Laguna Madre area hosts the World Championship Shrimp Cook-Off in November and the largest Causeway Run in January – a 6.2-mile race starting in Port Isabel and ending on South Padre Island. Don’t like to run? There is also a 3-mile walk across the Causeway.

#11 Los Fresnos Rodeo and Cameron County Fair & Livestock Show

In February

Los Fresnos is 23 miles west of South Padre.

So, here are many reasons to visit South Padre in the Off-Season. When are you going?
