You might know that Texas Travel Talk is partial to small towns. I, owner and editor, love a good, charming downtown. Things I look for when I visit small towns are historic courthouses and historic homes, and, if I’m lucky, both, with the courthouse right in the middle of the town square.
Other attractions I look for include museums that tell the town’s story and the architecture of old buildings. And of course, I love eating at mom-and-pop diners. Sometimes you’ll catch me walking through old cemeteries, but only during the day!

Fredericksburg
Why yes, Fredericksburg is more than its wineries and its fabulous shopping; the town is full of German heritage, and a museum dedicated to WWII. The year was 1846 when Fredericksburg was founded, marking the start of a German‑Texan settlement that still carries its Old World charm.
First, the Pioneer Museum comprises ten historic outdoor structures staged to depict how the Germans lived in the 19th century through artifacts, architecture, and audio history stories. Be sure to see the beautiful Glockenspiel Bell Tower.

Best Time to Visit Fredericksburg:
Well, it depends on why you’re going! Just make sure your favorite places are open when you go – i.e., Sunday/Monday.
Fredericksburg celebrates over 400 events annually.
Christmastime in Fredericksburg is said to be like a Hallmark movie, all dressed out with pretty bows lining the posts of the downtown stores.

Gonzales
One of my favorite towns, rich in Texas history, is Gonzales. I have to thank Janell for taking me on a tour of the County Jail Museum and the J. B. Wells House Museum; otherwise, my story below would be vague. Whenever possible, take the tour! Ask her to show you the old working well out back of the jail. It’s so cool.
Gonzales was founded in 1825, making it 201 years old!

Best Time to Visit Gonzales:
The best time to really get the whole story is when the museums are open. You probably should avoid going on a Sunday/Monday. And perhaps when a reenactment is underway. The kids would love to see that.

Below is an article about my time in Gonzales. I was there for two days and learned a tremendous amount of history I didn’t even know existed.
Brenham (Washington County)
Washington‑on‑the‑Brazos marks the spot where Texas truly began — the place where delegates signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Today, it stands as one of the state’s most significant historic destinations, blending Texas Revolution history with immersive living‑history experiences and a scenic stretch of Brazos River landscape.
Brenham and its neighboring towns are roughly 182 years old.
Barrington Living History Farm in Washington, TX, is a must-see.
Just eight miles from town is the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm. It’s best to go when you can pick your own lavender or during the festival.
Burton is such a wonderful town, and we met so many nice people there when we visited in April.
Best Time to Visit Brenham:
When you have the time to visit not only Brenham but also the other four small towns that make up mostly Washington County – Washington, Burton, Chappell Hill, and Independence. Oh, and during the week, the family can get a scoop of Blue Bell ice cream for only $1 at the Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham. They are closed Sat/Sun.
One annual event in Chappell Hill is its lavender festival.
Goliad
Sadly, I have not personally been to Goliad, but one of our writers has. We all know there’s a wealth of history there, and it is one of the oldest towns in Texas, at 277 years old! Hard to believe when you really think about it. As the battle cry yells – “Remember the Alamo! – Remember Goliad!”
Best Time to Visit Goliad:
Spring is a great time to take the family, as the temperature is generally in the 70s, and you may even see wildflowers. For the most immersive reenactment in Goliad, plan your visit during the Goliad Massacre & Living History Program, an annual late‑March event at Presidio La Bahía that brings the region’s history to life.
Castroville
Castroville, Texas, is a uniquely charming town where Texas pioneer history meets the enduring traditions of Alsace. Henri Castro founded Castroville in September 1844 and established an Alsatian community that is still celebrated today. Castroville is known as the “Little Alsace of Texas,” and there is no other town in Texas like it.
Best Time to Visit Castroville:
If you like outdoor markets, Fiorella Friday is the first Friday of the month from 6-9 pm, when over 40 vendors set up their wares on Fiorella and Paris streets in the historic downtown. The area shuts down for a festive block party, where visitors browse local vendors, enjoy live music, and sample food and drinks.

Jefferson
Cypress trees draped in Spanish moss have got to be the most peculiar thing I’ve ever seen – scary, too. If you visit Jefferson, a must-do activity is to take a guided tour on Lake Caddo. The tour guide will tell you everything you need and want to know, including pointing out the house Don Henley lived in during his younger years. There are many outdoor things to do in Jefferson – be sure to check it out.
Jefferson began as a booming river port in the 1800s, a frontier hub whose prosperity shaped the town’s enduring historic charm.
Best Time to Visit Jefferson:
Early to late fall is a great time to visit Jefferson to see fall foliage and enjoy the nice weather. If you like ghost stories, go when there is a ghost tour, which I believe is pretty often.
Stay in a historic bed-and-breakfast for a quaint stay and early-morning breakfasts.
Granbury
A precious town that gets all the awards is Granbury. The historic square is where everything seems to happen. There are many historic buildings, including the 1886 Granbury Opera House, which still operates.
Granbury is around 160 years old. That’s wild if you think about it.
Best Time to Visit Granbury:
If you like the lake life, visit Granbury in the summertime and take the kids to the city beach. Otherwise, any time of the year is a great time to visit this town. The shopping is great, and everything is open 7 days a week.
