Spend a Labor Day weekend in Texas with family and friends – here’s where.
Labor Day is another Texas holiday weekend we can spend doing summer things. Better yet, enjoy a long weekend into Monday! Labor Day is about celebrating the achievements of American workers. We celebrate you if you’ve ever worked a day in the USA! Labor Day is for you to rest and relax anywhere you feel comfortable. Enjoy that extra day, too.
If you plan to spend the holiday at home, you could always plan a backyard barbecue and play outdoor games. But, if you can extend summer for one more weekend, check out these recommendations below.
Labor Day Weekend In Texas
Now that July 4th is behind us, it’s time to start planning for the 3-day Labor Day weekend. Besides all the mattress discounts you’ll ever want to hear about (I actually bought one), I have a few ideas below where you can spend Labor Day weekend in Texas. I would love to plan a road trip every time a three-day weekend rolls around.
Staying close to home is an excellent possibility for a lot of us. It’s still hot in Texas, and almost everything related to summer is open through Labor Day. That is good for Texas.
Fun Things To Do on Labor Day In Texas
Some great options could be a resort with a pool, nearby beaches, lakes, golf courses, and your favorite water park. You could also rent a cabin at your favorite state park or bring a tent to camp out under the stars. These fun activities can continue in September.
So, if a pool party in your backyard is out of the question because you’ve already had plenty of those, it’s time to plan to go somewhere.
Labor Day is filled with festivals, food, and even balloon fests. Here are a few ideas and many things to do for you and your kids.
Please Note: Always check prices, opening dates, and times before you go.
North Texas
Areas north of Dallas, like Plano, The Colony, Frisco, and even Irving, which is west of Dallas, are getting a lot of hype these days. And for a good reason. More and more entertainment is coming to each city. And the best part is that residents of these areas no longer have to leave their city to find fun and excitement for their families—it’s right in their backyards!

The Grandscape (The Colony)
You could spend an entire day here enjoying all its attractions and live entertainment, or it might take you two days to see it all.

- Shopping major brands and boutiques
- Nebraska Furniture Mart
- Lots of dining options

And if you haven’t been to Grandscape lately, there are new attractions at Grandscape that have been added in the past six months.
Frisco Star District
Frisco has risen to the top. Visitors are swarming the area from downtown Frisco to the new Starplex to check it all out—another area in North Texas where you could spend the entire day and not see everything.
- The Starplex
- National Soccer Hall of Fame
- KidZania
- Shopping Mall
- Dining, bars, tea room, sweets
- Hotels (Omni & Hyatt) and the many all around the Starplex
Plus, there are many other things to do in the Rail District and all over town.
The Boardwalk At Granite Park – Plano
If you haven’t been to The Boardwalk, you need to go. Meander around the small lake while marveling at the foundation in the middle. Enjoy your pick of restaurants with inside and outside seating. Play the yard games that are available for all. Sit and watch people. Dogs welcome!
Check out what Rory and her family crammed into a weekend in Plano.
Legacy Hall In Plano
One area with your favorite food is what you’ll find at Legacy Hall. Order what you want and meet your gang at a table. It’s fabulous!
Toyota Music Factory – Irving
A live music venue is what you’ll find at the Toyota Music Factory, but there’s more. All around the lawn are restaurants with outside and inside seating. Picnic tables are on the grounds; you can even bring a blanket to sit on the grass. This is always a family-friendly event arena with pizza, hamburgers, chicken, tacos, and everything else!
And, if you go across the street to the Las Colinas Canal, there are more eateries. Plus, you can walk around the canal, rent a kayak, and even get serenaded on a riverboat for dinner. This area would make a lovely Labor Day weekend in Texas.
Labor Day Weekend In Granbury
If you’ve ever attended special events or a fun family festival on Granbury Square, you know Granbury, TX, is always worth visiting for a good party. From September 1st, the town will rock with another fun Labor Day festival, including a sidewalk sale on the square, live music, and a lighted boat parade on its city beach on Lake Granbury. Activities are free.
I think I’ll attend this festival just for its annual sidewalk sales. You? There’s sure to be some good sales going on. This will be a special Labor Day event for sure. Check out all the fun – Granbury Square Labor Day Weekend Celebration.
San Antonio
Labor Day River Walk Artisan Show
The river walk always knows how to celebrate a holiday. It may be a little crowded, but Labor Day is something to be proud of. Labor Day River Walk Artisan Show

Horseshoe Bay’s Bay View Restaurant & Bar
Tube The Rivers In New Braunfels
This is an excellent way to keep summer going one more weekend! Tubing down the Guadalupe River and the Comal River would be fun for the three-day Labor Day weekend if you don’t mind crowds. What better way to celebrate the unofficial end of summer than floating down a river? And, yes, the water is cold!
Drink Wine In Dripping Springs / Driftwood
If I lived closer, this is where I’d be. With the only town in the hill country to have wineries, distillers, and brewers, you know there will be some good parties. There are always good reasons to visit Dripping Springs, especially during the Labor Day weekend.
Hill Country Harvest Festival – Fredericksburg
Celebrate its annual grape picking and stomping tradition while enjoying award-winning Texas wines.

Two Family Resorts To Spend Labor Day Weekend
Margaritaville Resort On Lake Conroe
Nowhere else can you play in the sun, eat, swim, and walk barefoot while listening to music than at the Margaritaville Resort on Lake Conroe?
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!
Tanglewood Resort On Lake Texoma
This resort is located on the Texas-Oklahoma border and has everything your family needs to have a great time. There are new owners and managers and a new 3-tier pool with a slide. We were there two weeks ago and stayed in a villa suite, which was more than we expected. Check out our weekend at Tanglewood Resort below.
Central Texas
Hamilton Annual Labor Day Dove Festival
Hamilton, TX, is located on US Hwy 281 on the way to the hill country. Every Labor Day weekend, the community celebrates the county’s designation as “The Dove Capital of Texas.” Rodeos, concerts, vendors, 5K, parades, food trucks, and much more entertain the whole family.
Play In Austin
Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin would make an excellent trip for Labor Day with the family. Take a stroll down 6th Street, where the music scene is most exciting and where you can see the fantastic culture of the town. See the Mexican free-tailed bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge to make your trip even more exciting.
Omni Barton Creek Resort – Austin
Part of the Omni Hotel family. Barton Creek Resort has it all.
They offer special packages throughout the year, and my favorite is their Sunrise, Sunset & S’mores Package – great for the entire family and a good place to party. Available through Labor Day.
Lady Bird Lake, Travis Lake, and any lake in or around Austin will be packed with people. But it is something to consider. Bring your own kayak, so you don’t have to wait in line to get out on the water.
