Holiday 2026 is shaping up to be Texas’s most magical season yet.

Christmas in Texas blends southern festive traditions, town charm, and mild weather depending on where you go. While you might not find snow in many parts of the state, you will discover historic downtowns draped in twinkling lights, holiday parades, Christmas markets, dazzling light displays, and communities that embrace the season with true Texas hospitality. From the list below, which Texas Christmas getaway are you most excited about? We are going somewhere new this year—Johnson City, TX, to see their Lights Spectacular!

We’ve written about the 12 most charming Christmas towns in Texas; now we’re highlighting the best for a family holiday getaway. Some made both lists.

The perfect Texas Christmas Getaway

Several Texas towns put Christmastime at the top of their attractions list. They go all out, spreading holiday cheer for miles. We’ve been to a few, and we are still hoping to see a few more this year. Think the Hill Country, Central Texas, and North Texas.

1. Georgetown

Just 25 miles north of Austin, Georgetown offers a festive Christmas retreat, with the historic downtown Square twinkling with holiday lights and seasonal spirit. From shopping and dining to beloved holiday events, this welcoming town delivers plenty of Christmas magic and the perfect excuse for a cozy weekend escape.
Beautifully decorated for the season, Georgetown invites visitors to spend a cozy holiday weekend browsing charming boutiques, savoring local flavors, and sipping festive cocktails.

This year’s festivities include:

25th Annual Lighting of the Square – November 27: Georgetown kicks off the season with its holiday lighting tradition, carolers, visits with Santa, and a special 25th-anniversary surprise.

  • Coffee & Cocoa Crawl – November 28: Celebrate Small Business Saturday with festive sips, holiday shopping, and special offers throughout downtown.
  • 45th Annual Christmas Stroll – December 4–6: A three-day celebration featuring a Christmas parade, more than 200 artisan vendors, live entertainment, falling snow, and family-friendly activities.
  • Holiday Performances & Historic Home Tours: Seasonal productions at the Georgetown Palace Theatre and opportunities to explore beautifully preserved historic homes.

2. Grapevine

We can’t say enough about Grapevine’s fabulous holiday season. They are not called the Christmas Capital of Texas for nothing. Below are a few notable activities, plus one new one for this year.

  • Carol of Lights, the Annual Parade of Lights, the Merry & Bright Drone Show, and more than 1,400 events across 40 days
  • Santa’s North Pole Express.
  • Christmas Wine Trains, wine & Christmas cookie pairings, Winter Wonderland Bubbles and Christmas pop-up bars.
  • Movies at the Historic Palace Theatre, live entertainment, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

  • Christmas treats & drinks – Hot chocolate bars, Gingerbread decorating classes, coffee & cookie flights, and more.
  • Helpful visitor information – Free parking spots, Park and Ride options, and Historic Main Street closures.

This year’s show is Harry Potter. I think it’s going to be the best one yet. Who doesn’t love the kid who discovered he was a wizard and went on to save the wizarding world? For discounted tickets, use the promo code TRAVELING for all your ice! tickets. GO HERE for tickets and information.

3. Johnson City, TX

Just east of Fredericksburg in the scenic Texas Hill Country, Johnson City comes alive with a breathtaking display of more than 2 million LED lights. From November 27, 2026, to January 3, 2027, Johnson City hosts the annual Lights Spectacular, featuring dazzling displays that glow nightly from dusk to midnight.
This year, my son and I will get to see what everyone has been talking about.
Note for 2026: The Blanco County Courthouse display will not be available due to ongoing courthouse construction, shifting a portion of the focus toward Memorial Park and the surrounding downtown square.
Highlights of Christmas in Johnson City, TX:
  • Visit Farmhouse Vineyards the Friday after Thanksgiving for Texas wines, holiday gifts, and a book signing for my new book, Small Town Texas. It’s happening November 27, 2026.
  • Activities will include walking the historic downtown, local food trucks, holiday lights, and festive events
  • See Lights Spectacular for all the details.
