As the summer season winds down, the Texas Gulf Coast flourishes with warm weather and vibrant fall activities. With 624 miles of coastline, Texas’ beach towns invite visitors to experience a quieter, less crowded, yet equally captivating, side of coastal life with seasonal offerings ranging from festive events and fishing excursions to artsy endeavors.
The Gulf Coast has a rich history, including historical sites, landmarks, and Texas State Parks. All this and more is thriving in the fall season. October’s weather is in the 90s, extending our playing in the water just a little longer before winter sets in.
Visiting Texas Gulf Coast Beaches In The Fall
From museums to state parks to every inch of the coast, visiting the Gulf Coast in the fall makes sense. And, yes, you can still play in the water in October – we’ve done it twice now!
Rockport-Fulton, TX
The Rockport-Fulton area is located on the Texas Coast in Aransas County above Corpus Christi and Port Aransas. It’s a short drive from the Aransas Pass and a little over 2 hours from San Antonio. The area has many family attractions and some of the best places on the coast to make great family memories.
Fall is the perfect season to soak in the artsy vibes of Rockport-Fulton. The Rockport Center for the Arts hosts various exhibitions, events, and classes, while the Rockport Arts District buzzes with beachy boutiques and galleries. The autumn calendar is packed with creative celebrations, including the Rockport-Fulton SeaFair (Oct 4-6), the Rockport Film Festival, and the annual Rockport Songwriter Festival.
Stay Over: A 1,000-foot private pier is a perk at the nine-room waterfront Reel ‘em Inn.
Experience The Beach In Rockport-Fulton
Rockport Beach features playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, and cabanas, each with a barbecue grill. The mile-long Texas Gulf Coast beach was named the “blue wave beach” because of its cleanliness and well-maintained beach. Rockport Beach is a place you’ll want to spend all day. The serene bay waters are something you would see in the Caribbean.
Hike along the beach, piers, and walking trails while enjoying the beauty.
Port Arthur, TX
Port Arthur is located on the upper Gulf Coast at the Texas-Louisiana border, a border with many outdoor adventures. With Sea Rim State Park, Pleasure Island, Sabine Lake, and wildlife refuges, now named the “Cajun Capital of Texas,” there is something in this town for everyone.
The Museum of the Gulf Coast is packed full on its fall calendar with book signings, live music, and activities for the whole family. Don’t miss the Halloween Fun Day on October 26th. Each event is free and open to the public.
Experience The Beach In Port Arthur
Sea Rim State Park is where the gulf meets marsh – so they say! Swim, beach camp, walk, and paddle around the channels and lakes. Watch for wildlife (including alligators) and fish, and enjoy over 5 miles of shoreline for beachcombing, picnics, and playing in the sand. Cabins are available by reservation.
Pleasure Island offers disc golf, RV parks, boat ramps, a fishing pier, a birding site, and a marina. Its mild temperatures year-round allow golfers, sailors, windsurfers, boaters, and anglers to get outdoors and play—hard! There is also a yacht club for members only.
Also, check out McFaddin Beach – one of Port Arthur’s pristine upper Texas Gulf Coast beaches and part of McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. It boasts 20 miles of hard-packed sandy beach open to the public.
And if you like whiskey, there’s a great place to taste-test whiskey, bourbon, rum, and other spirits. It’s called Clifford Distilling at 235 Proctor St.
Galveston Island
Autumn ushers in a vibrant festival season in Galveston, just an hour’s drive from downtown Houston. Whether visitors crave coastal flavors at the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival (September), savor traditions at the Galveston Greek Festival, cheer on sailors at the Harvest Moon Regatta, or toast to German heritage at Island Oktoberfest, there’s a celebration for every taste. And don’t forget about the Artoberfest on Oct. 19-20.
Galveston’s restaurants serve many cuisines and are open year-round. Maybe, just maybe, the good ones won’t be so crowded in the fall months.

Experience The Beaches On Galveston Island
That’s our experience in Galveston in October a couple of years ago. We had no idea swimming was possible in October. But the water was warm, and the weather was not bad, so I let him jump in with all his clothes on. I was the best mom that year! We are going again this October (2024), and I will pack a swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen for him …and maybe for me too!
Galveston has seven public beaches equipped with amenities and food. And if you stay at the Grand Galvez, you’ll have access to their private beach, where you can reserve lounge chairs and an umbrella.
Port Aransas (Port A), TX
Renowned as the “Fishing Capital of Texas,” Port Aransas offers anglers the chance to experience bay, shallow, and deep sea fishing. Autumn starts a bustling tournament season featuring the Texas Women Anglers, Hunt for Reds October Couples, and Texas Jetty Walker Anglers Tournaments.
Festival: The Wooden Boat Festival (October) boasts the city’s boat-building heritage. Families can build a boat and then launch it. The event takes place at Roberts Point Park.
Stay Over: Cinnamon Shore’s colorful beach vacation rentals or the historic Tarpon Inn, built in 1886.
