Review: The Kendall Hill Country Inn Boerne, TX

The Kendall Hill Country Inn is a historic boutique hotel in charming Boerne, Texas (Texas Hill Country), along the banks of Cibolo Creek. It offers luxurious accommodations for unique getaways and has a fascinating historical background dating back to the 1800s when an underground tunnel ran to the Deinger Trading Co. and keys to your room—yes, the old-fashioned way.

The Kendall offers adorable suites and guest rooms, creating a wonderful, historically charming place to stay right off Main Street. Plus, an upscale fine-dining restaurant is steps away from the guests’ rooms.

Disclosure: The Kendall hosted me for two nights in one of their adorable courtyard cottages. All opinions are my own.

The Kendall Hill Country Inn

The Kendall Hill Country Inn

The most tranquil gated courtyard that I’ve ever seen. I would love to have my front yard look half this good. Mixed hanging plants & flowers, antiques throughout the lawns, a white gazebo, post lamps that keep the courtyard bright at night, and the dipping pool (small pool) make this place a perfect getaway for a quaint and relaxing stay. It’s a sure place to make people feel happy. And don’t forget there is direct access to the Heart of Boerne trail, beginning on the Inn’s grounds on the banks of Cibolo Creek.

A little about Boerne, Texas.

The town of Boerne is a hill country charm, a hop, skip, and jump from North of San Antonio, and some of the best shopping I’ve ever done. It’s okay if you don’t like shopping. There are two caves, wineries, parks, the Cibolo Nature Center, a bunch of breweries in town, an old jail cell to tour, and many more things to do. There are also lots of benches to sit and relax on Main Street.

The Kendall Guest Accommodations

From free-standing historic cabins reminiscent of the olden days to the St. John Suite, a former Lutheran Chapel turned heavenly suite – there is something for all tastes. The adorable cottage we stayed in was small, but enough room for two. The full-size beds were comfy, and the location (next to the pool) was the best. There are hot tubs and claw foot tubs in some suites.

What We’re Loving

Walking around the courtyard and on the walking trail to Cibolo Creek is what we loved the most about the area. We also never got in our car to go anywhere. It was all within walking distance. You can’t beat staying near all that and not having to get in and out of the car – and worrying about where to park.

The Kendall Hill Country Inn - Peggy's

On-site Restaurant

Chef/Owner Mark Bohanan drove north to find the perfect place to start a restaurant and found it in Boerne at Peggy’s On The Green – named after his late mother. He and his team serve Southern-inspired classic American cuisines such as salmon, shrimp & grits, crab cake, and these delicious desserts you see above. Enjoy indoor and outdoor seating.

I ordered the Woodford aged barrel Old Fashion, which was just made and not on the bar list. Adeina ordered a chocolate martini. We both agreed we wanted to try Peggy’s Deviled Blue Crab Dip – it did not disappoint us. Her main dish was the Jumbo Crab Cakes served on top of fried green tomatoes (which I ate), and I ordered the salmon with asparagus. We each ordered a dessert and shared. My brownie ice cream was so delicious that I could have eaten it first and been okay! The chocolate cake was scrumptious. So much food!

What Type Of Travelers Will You Find Here?

Couples, elder generation, wedding guests, girlfriends, pet parents, and families.

Are Pets Allowed At The Kendall?

Pet-friendly. Boerne is also a pet-friendly town.

The History of The Kendall

The historic hotel dates back to 1859, when the Reed family bought the land for only $200. The Reed’s rented out their spare bedrooms to stagecoach travelers and many famous people, including President Eisenhower. The German name is Ye Kendall Inn. Many original antiques adorn the property throughout, and many antiques are still in working condition, including door knobs, doors, windows, and such.

Are any other hotel features worth noting?

The Kendall is a fantastic wedding venue. The Historic Creekside, Late 1800s-Style Courtyard, and the spacious Kendall Halle are among the three stunning wedding venues to choose from. I’d find my favorite spot in the courtyard to get married if it were me.

It’s also the perfect place to celebrate any occasion – birthdays, anniversaries, special events, family reunions, and even a honeymoon!

What Is Near The Kendall?

Boutiques, shops, restaurants, breweries, the Cibolo Creek and picnic area, coffee shops, sweets, parks – you name it, you’ll find it on Main Street, aka The Hill Country Mile.

The Dienger Trading Co.

We enjoyed an excellent breakfast at what was once the town’s library and where that underground tunnel I mentioned above went from The Kendall in the 1800s. Oh, and the tunnel is still there but only used for storage.

The Dienger is a restaurant and boutique. The boutique is filled with nice upscale clothing for the whole family. It opens later, so we didn’t get to look around. But for a great breakfast or brunch, head there—and if you’re an avocado toast type of person, try their Smashed Avocado Toast With Farm-Fresh Eggs. I loved the ciabatta bread on the bottom!

J. Forks Designs

Oh, I have a lot to say about J. Forks. First, the girls that helped Adeina and me make our hats were lovely, sweet, and accommodating. We had a great time choosing our hats, color combinations, and branding styles. I chose the half sun, and Adeina got the Jeep symbol on hers.

After we were treated with a hat, we spotted whiskey in the corner, so we didn’t say no. I also love their boutique and found a couple of things I wanted. I decided to wear a floral blouse for the rest of the day. It indeed was a fun experience. So, get your girlfriends together and go to J. Forks Designs for a hat-making workshop and to shop for that outfit you’ve been wanting.

Free Roam Brewery

A former professional baseball player now owns Free Roam Brewery—a fun place for craft beers. Sit outside or inside and enjoy lunch from the food truck. Different food trucks every other day. We had the shrimp and chicken plate from The Alley Kitchen. So good!

Assemble Cocktail Workshop

Well, we sure had a couple of days making things. But this is our first time participating in a cocktail workshop. We made our drinks and then drank them! How fun. Assemble Cocktail Workshop is no longer located off Main Street – they went mobile.

If you’ve ever wanted to pound some ice (yes, they do that) and make your own cocktails, this is the place to contact. We made two drinks—a gin and a margarita—and they were the bomb!

Boerne Taco House

I love when a place offers us something that’s not on the menu – something brand new. This time it was the excellent drink you see in the above photo. It’s called Cantarito. I was so excited about it – I forgot to ask him what was in it —but it was excellent & spicy, and Insta-worthy! FYI – Cantarito is a tequila-based cocktail served in a clay cup.
