Ennis’ historic downtown houses the Railroad and Cultural Museum, where visitors can learn about the city’s rich railroad heritage. Ennis historically provided water for rolling stock between the Texas and New Orleans railroad. Additionally, Ennis’ thirteen saloons and six beer halls provided beverages to railroad employees during off-hours and slow seasons. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, this railway was a lifeline. And after a stressful week, a little escape to this museum (or the saloons) may also be a lifeline.
