Go Where The Buc-ees are!

Ennis, TX, makes for a lovely country getaway just 30 minutes south of Dallas on I-45. The small town of Ennis boasts various arts and cultural opportunities, great restaurants, and the title of “Official Bluebonnet City of Texas,” a popular annual bluebonnet festival that captures the hearts of many locals, as well as those from all around Texas and beyond. Here are great things to do in Ennis, TX, any time of year.

For those wanting an escape from the hustle and bustle of Dallas, Houston, or just life itself, look no further than Ennis. This little corner of southern comfort may seem tiny, but we’ve put together a guide to making the most of your trip.

Things To Do In Ennis, TX

This Main Street City offers a unique shopping experience, a historic downtown area, nearby lakes, parks, and a movie theater.

Ennis Visitor Center

Address: 201 Northwest Main Street, Ennis, Texas 75119

Always go by the visitor center when you first get in town, where you can pick up brochures, ask questions, use the facilities, and perhaps discover a hidden gem you didn’t know existed. We always recommend this. The Ennis Welcome Center is informative, and volunteers are waiting to answer your questions.

Ennis Bluebonnet Trail

Pick up a brochure at the Welcome Center at 201 NW Main.

When spring is in the air, it’s the beginning of bluebonnet season in Ennis, TX. From April 1 to April 30 of every year, take the 40-mile self-driving tour through the bluebonnets, capturing those photos of fields of blue. Keep in mind that some places are located on private land, but many are designed for visitors to get out of their cars and walk through the gorgeous flowers and scenery. It does make for a lovely, peaceful day. And also the perfect photo opp of the family, partner, and pets. Just don’t forget to pack your allergy meds! Oh, and no picking the Texas flowers – it’s the law!

Glaxy Drive-In Theatre

Address: 5301 I-45, Ennis, TX

Catch the latest flicks from the comfort of your car. Across several screens, Galaxy Drive-In plays a great selection of first-run movies, as well as double features. So pack up the car with your favorite blankets and snacks, and pull up for a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for kids. Parking spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s recommended to arrive at the showings with sufficient time to secure a great spot and catch the previews.

Ennis Public Theater

113 N Dallas St, Ennis

For those who love music and theater, the Ennis Public Theater is always holding plays, concerts, and instrumental performances. Founded by the husband-and-wife duo Bill and Suzanne Rhoton, the theater showcases local performers and artists, serving as a 501(c)(3) organization with donations supporting the cultivation of a creative community. So let this incredible collective of artists entertain you for a good cause.

Sugar Ridge Winery

353 Sugar Ridge Rd, Ennis, TX, 75119

Take a break from the kids, and pop in for a glass or two, or enjoy a wine tasting at Sugar Ridge Winery. This family-owned wine shop offers tastings, as well as wine by the glass or by the bottle. Our favorite way to indulge is by sitting on the patio, enjoying a lovely country sunset, and splitting a bottle of red.

Open Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tastings are $30 for 10-1 oz pours. Pets are allowed outside on a leash. They do not sell food, but have snacks.

Texas Motorplex

Address: 7500 US-287, Ennis, TX 75119

Dubbed the first National Hot Rod Association “super track,” the Texas Motorplex hosts professional drag racing and amateur races all year round. If you’ve never had the chance to see it live, it’s a thrill to watch. With so much history attached, this raceway makes you feel like you’re part of the action. Throughout the year, Texas Motorplex hosts various races, car shows, and trucking competitions. No shortage of speed over there!

Big O Speedway

Address: 3118 FM 85

Mid-March through October, every Saturday, watch dirt track car racing at its best—admission charge.

Railroad and Cultural Museum

105 NE Main St, Ennis, TX 75119

Ennis’ historic downtown houses the Railroad and Cultural Museum, where visitors can learn about the city’s rich railroad heritage. Ennis historically provided water for rolling stock between the Texas and New Orleans railroad. Additionally, Ennis’ thirteen saloons and six beer halls provided beverages to railroad employees during off-hours and slow seasons. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, this railway was a lifeline. And after a stressful week, a little escape to this museum (or the saloons) may also be a lifeline.

High View Park

262 High View Marina Rd

Set across the beautiful Bardwell Lake, High View Park is an excellent spot for the whole family to enjoy. Gorgeous greenery creates a tranquil oasis for adults, while allowing space for the kids’ imagination to thrive. Settle in for a picnic or play some interactive games with the family. If you want to spend a weekend here, there are plenty of campsites and electrical setups. So fire up the grill, or set up the projector, because everything else you need to keep entertained is right within your reach.

Fern In The Wild

211 W Knox St

Fine dining isn’t just for the city. Ennis’ own Fern in the Wild offers a hearty seasonal menu of pastas, such as the bolognese over pasta, as well as light plates, like the seasonally prepared salmon. The charming, cozy setting also offers private event space rentals and is ideal for your next birthday celebration, wedding, or a night out on the town. If you want to do some shopping, Fern in the Wild also features a charming store where shoppers can purchase candles, furnishings, clothing, and accessories.
