The Pharmacy & Medical Museum of Texas

Fall in love with Cuero, TX, through the seasons.

Cuero, TX, is nestled in the heart of South Texas, known for its rich history, turkey races, and close-knit community. The town of Cuero is a community-driven destination that consistently hosts a variety of events for locals and visitors. By the time you’ve finished reviewing this information, you’ll already be thinking about making plans to experience all the things to do in Cuero, TX. Wildflowers, historic downtown, turkeys, and Christmas, just to name a few, have put Cuero, TX, on the list of must-visit small towns in the Lone Star State.

Disclosure: Cuero Chamber of Commerce hosted me in their city, which included compensation. All opinions here are my very own.

Things To Do In Cuero, TX

There’s a rich history all around this small town in south-central Texas. I recently visited Cuero, and I am happy to say, the town will be featured in my upcoming book titled “Small Town Texas.” Do you know about Cuero, pronounced (KWEH roh)?

Where is Cuero, TX?

Cuero, TX, is located in DeWitt County, about halfway between San Antonio and the Gulf Coast. It’s approximately 2.5 hours from Houston, 2 hrs from Austin, and 32 miles from the town of Victoria.

What’s Cuero known for?

Cuero is the Spanish word for leather or rawhide. The town of Cuero is renowned for its rich history as the “Turkey Capital of the World,” a legacy celebrated annually at Turkeyfest.

Fun Things To Do in Cuero, TX for the Whole Family

Cuero is home to four museums. Each depicts the history of Cuero and DeWitt County. The Cuero Heritage Museum embarks on the culture of Cuero. The Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas showcases the rich history of healthcare and pharmacy memorabilia. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum depicts the days of ranching and the legendary cattle drives that once took place along the trail. Discover the history of De Witt County at the DeWitt County Historical Museum (currently under construction and expected to be completed early next year).

Cuero Heritage Museum

Explore the Cuero Heritage Museum, and you’ll quickly notice that every inch of the space highlights the town’s vibrant culture—from the early days of its festivals and traditional Turkey Trot attire to the pride of its Gobbler football legacy. The museum captures everything that has shaped Cuero since the 19th century, including its remarkable Coca‑Cola collection.

Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas

Step back in time at the Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas and discover the medical treatments and equipment used on patients, as well as the types of chairs and wheelchairs employed during that era. This is one museum not to miss, including seeing an original iron lung.

Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum in Cuero, Texas, celebrates the legacy of the legendary cattle drives and cowboy culture that shaped the American West, especially in DeWitt County and the Guadalupe River Valley.

This is a self-guided journey, allowing you to take your time and proceed at your own pace. Don’t miss the short film on the cattle drive.

Historic Downtown Cuero

Historic buildings from the 1800s line a long stretch of quaint shops in Cuero’s charming downtown area, which feature boutiques, clothing stores, antique stores, the oldest auto store in Cuero, restaurants, and more. I enjoyed shopping at several stores and even found some great treasures.

Historic Homes Tour

Take a self-guided historic home tour of the over 60 homes in Cuero. Go by the Chamber of Commerce office and pick up a map of the homes. These century-old houses are gorgeous, and it’s amazing how well-kept they all are. The ones I saw were spectacular and well-designed, and most had been restored to showcase their allure. Trust me, you’ll find a favorite and wish you could live in it!

The Proctor-Green House was built by David Proctor in 1892. In 2008, Robert Oliver purchased the home and restored it to its current appearance. The home has been gifted to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum and has been turned into an Airbnb to help raise funds for the museum.

Historic Churches

Many historic churches exist in Cuero. As you’re driving around looking at all the historic homes, notice all the churches, too.

Cuero Pecan House Cafe

A trip to Cuero wouldn’t be complete without dining at the Cuero Pecan House Cafe. I had lunch there one day and breakfast the next day. That bread pudding I had at breakfast was the best I’d ever tasted. This is the type of place where locals gather to enjoy each other …and a big lunch! Seriously, their meals are generous, and the customer service is top-notch. The Cuero Pecan Shop gives back to its community in numerous ways. I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner, and she shared stories about the Cuero community and how everyone comes together to support one another.

After a bite, be sure to walk across the street to The Pecan House and pick up some delicious pecans to take home.

Guadalupe Valley Padding Trail

If you have time in your visit, head to the Guadalupe River for a day of kayaking. If in spring, endure all the wildflowers you’ll see. Cuero, TX, is not called the “Wildflower Capital of Texas” for nothing. I was told that nearly every type of wildflower in Texas can be found in the area. Now, that’s a treat in my book!

Cuero TurkeyFest

2nd Full Weekend in October

Cuero Turkeyfest draws a large crowd not only from the community but also from visitors throughout Texas and beyond. It’s the top event of the year, and one of the top Texas festivals at the top of everyone’s list. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch two real-life turkeys race? It’s when Minnesotans come to race their turkey (Paycheck) with Cuero’s turkey (Ruby Begonia). May the best turkey win! Go Ruby Go!

2025 marked 53 years since Worthington, MN, and Cuero, TX, have raced their turkeys. Both towns are serious about winning! But more so, the camaraderie between these two towns is unmatched. I was so impressed by the people from Minnesota and by how their friendships extend far beyond the Turkey Race in October (and in September in Worthington).

FYI: Hotels sell out every year.

Don’t miss Christmas in Downtown Cuero. From horse carriage rides to ice skating for the whole family, artisan markets, food vendors, live music, and much more, you’ll want to put Cuero on your holiday travel list. Look for a Christmas Market under the Pavilion, along with food trucks.

There are many activities in this small town, and from experience, I know the community works hard to showcase everything it offers to locals and visitors. I’m sure you’ll find these things to do in Cuero, TX, worth visiting. Make your plans now! For more information on Cuero, please visit the Cuero Chamber of Commerce.
