Historic Downtown Cuero
Historic buildings from the 1800s line a long stretch of quaint shops in Cuero’s charming downtown area, which feature boutiques, clothing stores, antique stores, the oldest auto store in Cuero, restaurants, and more. I enjoyed shopping at several stores and even found some great treasures.

Historic Homes Tour
Take a self-guided historic home tour of the over 60 homes in Cuero. Go by the Chamber of Commerce office and pick up a map of the homes. These century-old houses are gorgeous, and it’s amazing how well-kept they all are. Trust me, you’ll find a favorite and wish you could live in it!
The Proctor-Green House was built by David Proctor in 1892. In 2008, Robert Oliver purchased the home and restored it to its current appearance. The home has been gifted to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum and has been turned into an Airbnb to help raise funds for the museum.

Cuero Pecan House Cafe
A trip to Cuero wouldn’t be complete without dining at the Cuero Pecan House Cafe. I had lunch there one day and breakfast the next day. That bread pudding I had at breakfast was the best I’d ever tasted. This is the type of place where locals gather from the community to enjoy each other …and a big lunch! Seriously, their meals are generous and the customer service is top-notch. The Cuero Pecan Shop gives back to its community in numerous ways. I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner, and she shared with me all about the Cuero community and how everyone comes together to support one another. I’m very impressed with the entire town of Cuero.
After a bite, be sure to walk across the street to The Pecan House and pick up some delicious pecans to take home.

Cuero Turkeyfest draws a large crowd not only from the community but also from visitors throughout Texas and beyond. It’s the top event of the year, and one of the top Texas festivals at the top of everyone’s list. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch two real-life turkeys race? It’s when Minnesotans come to race their turkey (Paycheck) with Cuero’s turkey (Ruby Begonia). May the best turkey win! Go Ruby Go!
This year (2025) marked 53 years since Worthington, MN, and Cuero, TX, have raced their turkeys. Both towns are serious about winning! But more so, the camaraderie between these two towns is unmatched. I was so impressed with the people I met from Minnesota, and how their friendships extend far beyond the Turkey Race in October (and in September in Worthington).
FYI: Hotels sell out every year.
