In case you didn’t know, one of the top things to do in Brenham is to visit the Blue Bell Creameries Headquarters, tour the visitor center and the observation tower, and head over to the ice cream parlor for a $1 cup or cone of your favorite ice cream. Be prepared to wait in line, especially on busy non-school days. The other is to experience its charming hospitality and the shopping.
During spring, the drive through the towns listed here is popular for scenic wildflower views.
Getting there…
The gateway to Washington County from the Dallas-Fort Worth area is through Bryan/College Station, to Chappell Hill, then on to Brenham on Hwy 290. Burton and Independence are on the other side of Brenham. Washington, however, is right above Chappell Hill. It really depends on where you’re coming from and which town you want to visit first.
Otherwise, these towns are between Austin and Houston – almost a straight shot on Hwy 290.

Burton
Population 286
Burton, Texas, is a tiny but character‑rich community tucked between Brenham and Round Top in Washington County. Burton’s quiet streets, historic buildings, friendly cafés, and close‑knit charm make it an inviting stop for travelers who love heritage, history, and the slower pace of small‑town life.
Below are a few places in Burton that we visited.

The Pink Door On Main
The newest boutique in town is adorable. If you love pink, you’ll love this place, from bedding to floral to upscale decor. The owner did a fabulous job with her boutique.

Junk in yer Trunk
This place is full of antiques, trinkets, collectibles, and more.

Burton Short Stop
My mom said her BLT sandwich was the best she has ever had. She went on to say that it was loaded with bacon and tomatoes and so huge that she couldn’t finish it. Yes, this place is good and fun to hang out in. I recommend the hamburger and fries.

Orvie’s Hall
The owner of Orvie’s Hall got wind that we were coming to town and invited us to a cupcake-and-wine flight. We just happened to be close by, having lunch at Burton Short Stop, so, of course, we stopped by to introduce Texas Travel Talk to them (and my upcoming book). The owner did a fabulous job with the decor. They will soon add a restaurant.

Chappell Hill
Population 2,114
Chappell Hill is a historic town known for its bluebonnet fields and its annual Bluebonnet Festival. There are more than 25 Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks and several sites in the National Register of Historic Places. The Main Street District feels like stepping back in time. It’s the perfect place to visit for anyone seeking scenery, history, and small‑town warmth.
There’s a fabulous garden store full of plants and flowers, a few boutiques, and several places to eat right on Main Street. I wished we had time to stay longer, but I’m glad we finally got to visit the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm.
A great place to visit is the Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum, filled with exhibits of the Civil War, early settlers, and other historical stories. There’s also a guided listening tour available, either by walking or driving, to see over 30 historic sites, including the 1850 Stagecoach Inn, General Store, and several historic homes.
If you’re visiting in April, the Official State of Texas Bluebonnet Festival is on April 11-12, 2026. Their annual Scarecrow Festival is in October.

Washington
Population 265
Explore its rich Texas history as the “Birthplace of Texas” near Washington-on-the-Brazos.
The park is an excellent outdoor venue for a family reunion in Texas. We had our first Byars reunion back in 2001, and our second in March 2026. You do have to make reservations and pay a fee. My uncle took care of all that.
The Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is a must-visit. When I took my son there years ago, he was in the 5th grade or just finished. He was so enthralled by what the speaker had to say because he had learned about it in school. I was so glad he was with me on this trip.
The Barrington Living History Farm is the final home of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. See a demonstration of how they lived back then. When we were there, we picked cotton and saw oxen, which are still used on the farm.

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Washington, the villas at Chapelton Vineyards are exquisite guest houses with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, and a private chef option. Bicycle for use, outdoor patio at each villa, chef’s kitchen …and wine, of course.
Explore their website to see the fabulous vineyards and gorgeous villas.

Chappell Hill Lavender Farm
The farm is eight miles north of Washington. Pick-your-own lavender is in May and August, but be sure to call or check their website for the exact dates. That’s the best time to go when the lavender is available to pick. There is a gift shop and a few cute animals on the property.
Independence
Population 140
The historic town of Independence was once the county seat, so the town square was built around the courthouse. But the town of Brenham took that away by two votes. Independence is just north of Brenham, where you can see buildings along FM 50 that reflect early Texas history.
Places to visit in Independence include the Antique Rose Emporium, the ruins of Old Baylor University, the Sam Houston Homestead, and the Texas Baptist Historical Museum. Small but might town for sure!
