Ennis, TX
The Official Bluebonnet City of Texas
The state legislature deemed Ennis the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas in 1997. April is the best time to visit Ennis to see the blooming wildflowers and attend the annual Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival. The festival occurs during the second or third week of April and is an excellent opportunity to enjoy spring festivities and food.
The wildflower peak in Ennis is usually in the third week of April.
State Highway 31 from Corsicana to Athens is an incredible scenic drive through the countryside, where you can admire pink evening primroses and wild indigo. The Ennis Garden Club maintains a 40-mile official Texas Bluebonnet Trail. Before you go, download the wildflower trail map from the Bluebonnet Trail’s website or pick it up at the Ennis Visitor Center.

If you haven’t heard of Chappell Hill, then I’m sure you’ve heard of the town of Brenham. Its well-known Blue Bell Creameries and Bluebonnet vistas have put this town on a must-visit list. But don’t overlook Chappell Hill because that’s where the highly anticipated Bluebonnet Festival is held.
Washington County is actually one of the most scenic road trips to see Texas bluebonnets. Springtime colors inundate farm roads through Brenham, Chappell Hill, Washington, Independence, and Burton from early March to early May.
Each small town offers a variety of attractions, activities, and experiences that can make the trip unforgettable. Explore wineries and pubs, walk through the bustling downtowns, and don’t forget to swing by the Blue Bell Creameries visitor center to get a glimpse of what the ice cream containers looked like when you were young. If you like red, you’re in for a treat with a million red poppies growing all over town. Georgetown’s Red Poppy Festival is in April. Best time to go!!

Castroville, TX
The Little Alsace of Texas
The charm of this town and the European architecture is a must-visit gem, but in spring is when the red poppies pop. The above photo shows a sign about the Poppy House. That photo was taken in January, but the entire yard will be filled with red poppies in mid-March to mid-April. The owner opens up his property for photography (with a fee). Call 210-627-1298 for more information. Also, you can see poppies spring up around the Steinbach Haus Visiting Center, which is free to tour inside.

Cuero, TX, is the heart of South Texas. In April, maps for wildflower viewing are available at the Chamber of Commerce. The city is also on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, so bring your binoculars.
