Small town Breckenridge, Texas, is getting a reboot, and we think it’s worth visiting.
No, not the town in Colorado, but in West Texas! Breckenridge, TX, the Mural Capital of Texas, has had its share of dilapidated buildings, broken windows, and parking lots that are not worth parking in. However, this small town is undergoing a transformation for the better. Breckenridge is located 30 miles from Graham, about 58 miles from Abilene, and a stone’s throw from Possum Kingdom Lake. Here are the top things to do in Breckenridge, TX, plus a little bit of history!
One reason I wanted to write about Breckenridge, Texas, and in my upcoming book, scheduled for release in the fall of 2026, is that I believe it is a fascinating destination with much history. Plus, who knew that gambler and gunslinger, John Henry “Doc” Holliday, once roamed the brick roads of Breckenridge, TX, during the oil boom?
Fun Things To Do In Breckenridge, TX
From brand new restaurants to fab downtown boutiques and a new winery just outside of town, you’ll want to put this small town in Texas on your list to visit soon. Keeping up with its title as the mural capital of Texas, declared in 2001 by the State Legislature, you’ll want to see the new murals and the restored murals in town that depict the days of the 19th century. Let’s celebrate the success of Breckenridge in not-too-far West Texas.

We love small towns with their original red brick roads, and a bonus is when they have a walkable downtown and a beautiful courthouse. Breckenridge, TX, has all three …and we can’t get enough.
Swenson Memorial Museum
This historic museum preserves the history of Breckenridge, TX. From the many photographs by Basil Clemons during the oil boom, to the history of Stephen County, old toys from the past, the exhibit of the late Jerry Tubbs, when he won the championship with the Breckridge Buckaroos, then went on to play for the University of Oklahoma, and his career with the Dallas Cowboys.

Marvel Over The Many Murals in Breckenridge, TX
Breckenridge was named the Mural Capital of Texas in 2001, boasting a rich history of murals. But the town is not stopping there; little by little, new murals are coming to town. Of course, the history of this small town is reflected in the murals, but when new ones appear, it brightens up the city.
Most murals I saw are on side buildings on Walker Street, but don’t miss the ones on side streets, too.
Shop The Boutiques & Stores Downtown Breckenridge, TX
One of my favorite boutiques in Breckenridge is Bertie & Olif. I can always find something I can’t live without. However, if you continue walking, you’ll come across more charming stores, like House of Flowers, and a variety of gifts and treasures to purchase. Lunch is always good at the Blackhorse Mercantile & Cafe. They serve fine food, and my meals there were excellent. Try their soups.
Breckenridge Fine Arts Center
Iwona Jankowski’s art exhibit will be on display until June 7, 2025. Permanent exhibits include paintings, sculptures, an extensive doll collection, and festival gowns.

Neri’s Courtyard Bar & Grill in Breckenridge, TX
Neri’s in Breckenridge is brand new. The chef and owner brings her fortune to downtown Breckenridge after having significant success in another small town 30 minutes away in Graham. I’ve only eaten at Neri’s in Graham, but I’ve tried several of their dishes there, and all were excellent. On my last visit, a friend suggested we order the pig skins and guacamole dip, so we did. It did not disappoint. Our dinner meals were huge and satisfying. I recommend asking for your order of fries to be extra crispy!

Soggy Dog
The building, as I write this, is getting ready for its grand opening on June 7, 2025. Soggy Dog, named after their precious Dixie, was first located inside Bertie & Olif. It was there for one year, and served wine, craft beers, and lunch, but the owner, and my friend Brian, have always had higher dreams for Soggy Dog. He and his wife found a building in downtown and have transformed it (inside and out) into a spectacular place for people to gather for friendship and Italian food, including wood-fired pizza. A full bar, including award-winning Texas wines, will also be served.
Be sure to check out the outdoor space, where live music will be playing. And bring your dogs, because Dixie loves 4-legged friends, too!

CC Farms Winery & Venue Estate
This is a darling winery and event space about 10-15 minutes outside of Breckenridge. Amanda took me here because she knew I would love it. She’s right. What’s not to love about a winery that serves food, has exceptional owners, and $12 wine tastings! However, that’s not all; they also have a B&B on the property, a spa, and ample space for weddings and various events. Can’t wait to visit again.

Fort Griffin State Park And Historic Site
Just down the road in Albany, about a 15-minute drive from Breckenridge, is Fort Griffin. It preserves the ruins and restored structures of a post-civil war fort built in 1867. Grab a golf cart and take off around the park to see it all, or walk in the tracks of what was once a soldier’s struggle on the
Texas frontier.
Possum Kingdom State Park
Possum Kingdom State Park is near three thriving small towns: Graham, Mineral Wells, and Breckenridge. The park offers a variety of activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, skiing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. There are also opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking, biking, studying nature, and geocaching.
