Most Overcrowded Tourist Destinations in Texas
Texas remains one of the nation’s most sought‑after travel destinations, attracting visitors with its vibrant cities, wide‑open landscapes, and rich cultural mix. Its signature blend of Western heritage, modern experiences, and diverse attractions continues to draw millions each year …and that’s a good thing!
But overcrowding creates gridlocked roads, long lines at attractions, more angry tourists, and possibly higher prices. So, why not go when overcrowded tourist destinations are not at their peak time?
Austin
Just getting to Austin on Interstate 35 is treacherous. The traffic on I-35 is no joke.
In Austin, tourists can explore the Capitol every day of the week, either on a guided tour or a self-guided tour. The vibrant food‑truck scene is a thing in Austin, and endless live music venues are everywhere. Natural gems like Barton Springs Pool can get very crowded on hot summer days.
I really don’t know what the best time to visit Austin is, but perhaps the early morning is best.
Round Top
It’s no surprise that this small town, with a population of not even 100, gets crowded during its antique weekends. Did you know that Round Top and its boutiques, restaurants, and hotels are also opened year round? If you don’t like the crowds, we suggest visiting Round Top during its off-season. You’ll get the same hometown feel
New Braunfels
Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels, the #1 waterpark in the world, is no joke in summer. Not to mention, the Comal River in Landa Park attracts many tourists on any given day in spring, summer, and even fall, thanks to our warm, mild weather. Shoot for October through November for less crowded memories!
Wimberley
Just when we thought Wimberley was a hidden gem in Texas, the word has gotten out, and now it’s too crowded on any given weekend. Parking in this small town can be a challenge when downtown is filled with tourists.
If planning to hike to Jacobs Well Natural Area, the best time is early morning (8 AM–10 AM) to avoid crowds and heat. Also, pets are not allowed on the trail. And, currently, swimming is not allowed at Jacobs Well.
Old Baldy is worth a look. Grab good shoes to climb all those steps!
Fredericksburg
Yes, wine country gets overly crowded, especially on weekends when many events take place in town, like weddings, bachelorette parties, Texas wine passport events, and more.
It’s almost imperative that you make reservations at wineries, especially for a party of six or more. Also, if headed to Enchanted Rock, be sure to make an online reservation there as well.
San Antonio River Walk
San Antonio is a big city, and the River Walk is the most crowded. Go early and get to a restaurant before the popular lunchtime crowd arrives. Opt to sit outside to watch the boat go by.
The missions in San Antonio would love everyone to visit.
Canton
Canton, TX swells far beyond its 4,800 residents during the monthly First Monday Trade Days, when more than 100,000 visitors pour into town. Held on the weekend before the first Monday, the event brings a surge of shoppers, vendors, and traffic that often leaves the small community packed to the brim.
Overcrowded Texas Beaches
Port Aransas
Port Aransas ranked 3rd most overcrowded in the state in 2025. People argue this town as I’ve seen it on both sides – overcrowded and undercrowded. Chances are, this town and its beaches are not hurting for tourists; it just might be that other beaches on the Gulf Coast get more visitors than they do. Check the hotels when you want to go, and if most are sold out, that’s a guarantee this beach will be crowded. Pick your visit wisely, and try to go before or after, say, spring break or summer.
Galveston
Galveston’s West End includes the Galveston Island State Park, Jamaica Beach, and other residential areas. Many West End vacation rentals contribute to overcrowding, especially on roads, in restaurants, and at Gulf Coast recreation rentals.
South Padre Island
SPI can swell at times, but I’m surprised it made the list here, since being so far south in the state, it just doesn’t get that many visitors, though I thought. If you have no children in school, go when they are in school, not during spring break.
Most overcrowded tourist destinations in Texas still need us to visit – just pick your time wisely.
