Weekend getaway across north texas

Downtown Denison, Texas

No matter the season, these North Texas spots deliver memorable moments for families.

Thank goodness summer is finally winding down. Fall brings that cool, refreshing breeze we’ve all been waiting for. If you’re ready for a family weekend road trip—or even a simple staycation close by—these destinations deliver, from cozy cabins tucked in the woods to waterfront hikes and charming historic downtowns. Enjoy these weekend getaways in North Texas, filled with family‑friendly attractions and easy drives that make planning a trip simple and fun.

Takeaways:

  • Wander through over 40 locally owned shops that fill historic Granbury Square with Texas‑themed goods, unique antiques, handcrafted pieces, and charming boutiques.
  • Explore this North Texas lake, a laid‑back spot perfect for family adventures, from swimming and boating to simple lakeside relaxation.
  • Kick back in Denison, where there is always something going on in winter, spring, summer, and fall!
  • Bring your own food, or if you don’t feel like cooking, two restaurants will provide you with a well-prepared meal at this North Texas resort.
  • Discover downtown McKinney and its award-winning farmer’s market.

My son and I just came back from visiting Denison and taking a sunset cruise on Lake Texoma. Both are worth a visit!

Great Weekend Getaways Across North Texas

North Texas is packed with places that make weekend travel simple and rewarding. With historic downtowns, scenic lakes, and family‑friendly attractions, these getaways offer something everyone can enjoy.

1. Escape to Granbury

Small-town Granbury doesn’t win the best historic downtown square awards for nothing. It’s filled with boutiques, restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, ice cream parlors, an opera house, and quaint hotels offering upscale dining and so much more. Not only that, but a few blocks from the square is a sandy lake beach.

Enjoy sunsets on Lake Granbury, relax in a cozy B&B or lakeside cottage, or one of the hotels on the square. You can’t go wrong anywhere you stay in Granbury.

We think Granbury is worth visiting any time of year!

2. Lake Texoma Escape

Just over an hour from Dallas, Lake Texoma offers plenty of recreational opportunities for the whole family, including guided fishing trips, water sports, boat rentals, sunset cruises, golfing, dining, lodging, and lazy afternoons sitting in your favorite chair.

Lake Texoma spans from North Texas across the Oklahoma border, stretching into a sprawling playground of coves, marinas, and scenic lakefront escapes. And somewhere along the line, the Red River plays into the lake. Whether going to the Pottsboro side or Oklahoma, it’s the same water and the same fun.

Rent a lakeside cottage or a waterfront cabin with an outdoor grill. Everyone in the family will enjoy what this North Texas lake has to offer.

Eisenhower State Park is just north of Denison and runs along Lake Texoma.

If you’ve had enough of the lake life, head to downtown Denison for wine tastings, boutique shopping, and dining on the beautiful 1800s Main Street.

3. Discover Denison, TX

Just north of Sherman is a world of difference from the city. Don’t compare Denison to Sherman, like I did before I visited. Denison—especially its historic downtown—feels like a vibrant, walkable district where local pride, great food, and small‑town charm come together.

Did you know Denison, TX, is the birthplace of Dwight D. Eisenhower, America’s 34th president?

My son and I just returned from Denison, where we experienced its Main Street wine walk, Bonjour, Denison Market, Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site, Ironroot Republic Distillery, and top-notch dining. I’m writing a full article on our weekend trip and will share the many upcoming events this town will host the rest of the year and into 2027. I was blown away by the downtown area.

4. Tanglewood Retreat

Another wonderful place to bring the family in North Texas — almost to the Oklahoma Border. When we visited in 2022, new things were happening. We met several families that were having their family reunion there. I’m sure this place has had more upgrades since we were there last. You can choose to stay in villas, guest houses, or hotel rooms depending on your family size.

Tanglewood on Lake Texoma is more than a place—it’s a lakeside escape where relaxation, recreation, and Texas hospitality come together. Plus, they have a fabulous spa. If you want a massage, it’s a good idea to book it in advance.

5. Historic Downtown McKinney

McKinney has one of the state’s oldest and largest historic districts with a downtown square. Not only that, but it also has one of the best farmers’ markets I’ve ever been to. Vendors show up with their creative wares, everything from homemade sourdough breads to handmade soaps to fresh veggies and more.

Explore historic buildings at the Chestnut Square Heritage Village, sip beer at Tupps Brewery, attend a festival, enjoy live music at many different venues in downtown, and eat good food!

These weekend getaways across North Texas promise unforgettable moments, offering experiences that linger long after the trip is over.
